Business Value Assessment

Identifying the need to implement a workplace solution is one challenge. Where and how to start is another. Based on extensive experience working with clients on a variety of portal initiatives around the world, IBM has developed a Business Value Assessment (BVA) to help guide your enterprise portal and workplace strategy. Fast and priced to fit your budget, BVA is your first step toward creating a workplace for your organization.

Alacrinet consultants plan and execute the BVA from a business perspective, employing a proven assessment methodology to help you gain the maximum benefits and insight for your organization. The BVA offering provides a set of tools you can use to prioritize and analyze the impact of making a portal investment, replacing an existing portal or adding more functions to an existing portal. Through onsite and offsite interviews, workshops and e-meetings (typically taking no more than two to four days over two to four weeks in total), Alacrinet consultants implement a proven, three-step method. And because the BVA is modular, you have the flexibility to choose the modules that address your business needs.

The BVA methodology can help:

Align line-of-business (LOB) and IT management with a common and prioritized set of capabilities for your portal.

Provide you with a vision of the portal when it’s complete.

Give you a high-level cost and benefit analysis to define the value of a portal solution in financial terms.

Module 1—Business Value Alignment
"What should our organization do with a portal and workplace?"

To facilitate the assessment process, IBM consultants work closely with your LOB managers to help determine how you can reap the greatest benefit from a portal and workplace solution. Through an onsite workshop and telephone interviews, you can assess portal and workplace initiatives to determine measurable benefits compared to ease of implementation. Through these discussions, IBM consultants can help your project stakeholders reach a shared understanding of the different portal and workplace investment benefits and risks—and consensus about how to proceed.

Module 2—Day-in-the-life Value Demonstration
"What can the portal and workplace experience be for my company?" After completing the initial Business Value Alignment module, IBM consultants help you create a working model that represents the possibilities of your portal and the potential impact it can have on your organization. The output from the Business Value Alignment module is used to prepare and build the model. This day-in-the-life solution scenario enables you to visualize how a proposed portal and workplace solution can deliver value. The module, in turn, can enable you to demonstrate the value and functions of the portal to a wider audience throughout your value chain. The results of this module are used for the ROI analysis and for input to help guide implementation.

Module 3—Business Value Assessment (ROI)
“How do I financially justify a portal and workplace?”

IBM can work in conjunction with your business, financial and technical team members to identify the potential employee and IT Infrastructure costs required to implement a portal and workplace solution. Data analysis and modeling tools leverage data from WebSphere Portal software deployments and case studies to help produce macro estimates of costs and benefits. Tailored deliverables from this module include a written report outlining ROI and cost-benefit analyses.Optional:

Module 4—Business Value Realization Survey“We justified and installed a portal and workplace. Are we receiving benefits from it?”
Six to nine months after the BVA is performed and you have installed your portal, IBM returns to measure achieved benefits and recommend changes to further improve your ROI. IBM can also visit after twelve to eighteen months to conduct another Value Realization Survey. You can also use this module as part of the BVA process in situations where there is an existing portal (IBM or non-IBM), against which you need to benchmark ROI.
